50 Shades! the Musical to launch National Tour and plans NYC run

IMageThe new musical parody of the international hit books 50 Shades of Grey, titled 50 Shades! the Musical will launch a national tour starting April 2, 2013 in Raleigh, NC.  The show, created by the group that brought you Baby Wants Candy, lampoons the characters, raunchiness and ridiculousness of the books, all the while steering clear (perhaps to the dismay of some audience members) of nudity.

What has presenters across the country clamoring to book the show is not just that the musical has garnered rave reviews from its previous performances  but that you don’t have to have read the books to enjoy the show.  As Al Samuels (director/co-writer) states, “Part of the framework of the show is that the books, and the phenomenon around them get explained and made fun of in a fun way. Then we actually dive into the book itself and rip it apart in good fun. It’s so great that we’re are able to take this series that people really love and put our own spin on it and do something new that people really, really love.”

With the critical response to date, 50 Shades! the Musical looks to be leading the pack of musical parodies of the books. There are two other parodies, SPANK, a three woman cast now on tour, and Cuff Me a four person cast playing Off-Broadway. 50 Shades! the Musical boasts a cast of nine and a three musician band backing them up.

Some of the critical response for 50 Shades! has been, “Finally a play your inner goddess, your book club and your mother-in-law can all agree on!”- Time Magazine;  “A titillating spectacle with plenty of sensuality. As erotic and decadent as you’d expect. A collaboration of comedy writers creating an ultra-spicy script!”- CNN; “HIGH-lariously Hawt! Absolutely perfect! Catch it if you can!”- Perez Hilton; “Pure, unadulterated humor—and it had the packed audience at Manhattan’s Gramercy Theater guffawing and sputtering for an entire 90minutes!”- The Daily Beast
