Tony Award winner Audra McDonald will appear in “Elmo the Musical”, a new segment to be featured on Sesame Street. “Elmo the Musical” replaces the popular “Elmo’s World” which has not produced new episodes since 2009.
In each of the ten 11-minute segments to be featured this year, Elmo stars in a stage production of his imagination. Joey Mazzarino, writer of “Sesame Street”, and his team wrote lyrics for each episode, and music was commissioned from a number of Broadway orchestrators, including Alex Lacamoire (In the Heights). Of the new songs to be featured is “Keep on Clucking” in “Circus the Musical”, sung by Ms. McDonald.
McDonald currently plays Bess in Broadway’s Porgy and Bess. The production finishes its run September 23. McDonald earned her fifth Tony Award for her performance. Other nods include Carousel, A Raisin in the Sun, Master Class and Ragtime. She also earned nominations for 110 in the Shade and Marie Christine.
The upcoming Sesame Street season will also feature appearances by Tony winner David Hyde Pierce, two-time Tony nominee Amy Ryan, Broadway vets Kristen Bell and Mario Lopez, as well as Halle Berry, Don Cheadle, Steve Carell, Zac Efron, Casey Affleck, Paula Patton, Melissa McCarthy, Jon Hamm, Eric Stonestreet, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Timothy Olyphant, Maya Rudolph, Ed Helms, Dax Shepard, Blake Griffin, Matt Kemp, Wendy Williams, Colbie Caillat, rock band Train, Common and Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor.
