The new touring revival of Jekyll & Hyde officially opened on Broadway, April 18, 2013 and the critics still don’t like the show. But does that really matter with this brand and with the legions of ‘Jekies’ who love the music and flock to see the music stars Constantine Maroulis and Deborah Cox? We think not. After all, the show ran for 1500 performances the first time around and it was not well received by critics then. Judging by the volume of tweets about the show, this production looks like it will have a decent run on Broadway during its limited 13 week engagement.
Jekyll & Hyde is the most favored of Frank Wildhorn’s 6 Broadway musicals. With lyrics by Leslie Bricusse and direction by Jeff Calhoun/choreography, the show has been on tour in the US and will continue to tour after the Broadway run. Maroulis, 6th on “American Idol” in 2005 was well-received in Rock of Ages, but critics find his acting performance lacking in J & K while praising his vocal ease in the role.
