Once, not surprisingly, won big last night, raking in a total of eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical Direction, Best Lead Actor in a Musical and high honors for Best Musical overall. Though Clybourne Park took home the coveted award for Best Play, Peter and the Starcatcher ranked second, winning five awards including Christian Borle’s award for Best Featured Actor in a Play.

Other notable winners include Audra McDonald, who took home the award for Best Lead Actress in a Musical for The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess. This is Audra’s first Tony Award for a leading performance and her fifth overall award. Nina Arianda won for Best Leading Actress in a play for Venus in Fur and eight-time Oscar winner Alan Menken won his first Tony Award for Best Original Score for the musical Newsies.

The night’s biggest surprise goes to the award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role. James Corden beat out front-runner Phillip Seymour Hoffman, as well as other nominees James Earl Jones, Frank Langella and John Lithgow.
