The award winning theatre company, Transport Group, has announced that its 2011 Gimme A Break! Benefit, to be held on December 5 at the Asia Society Museum, will honor esteemed playwright Douglas Carter Beane and composer/lyricist Lewis Flinn. Beane and Flinn will receive the Transporting American Theatre Award for their outstanding contributions to American theatre.
Beane is the Tony Award-nominated dramatist of Sister Act, Xanadu and The Little Dog Laughed. Beane worked from a book all ready established by Cheri and Bill Steinkellner when writing new material for the Broadway premier of Sister Act. Beane’s script was nominated for a Tony Award and his version is not touring the U.K. Flinn contributed to The Divine Sister as well as the composition for more than 50 productions.
According to the Transport Group website, the annual gala will feature Broadway performers who will share their personal “big break” experiences through story and song. Julie Halston of The Divine Sister, Hairspray, and Gypsy is set to host the event that will boast performances by Tony nominee Kerry Butler (Xanadu, Catch Me If You Can), Jackie Hoffman (The Addams Family, Xanadu, Hairspray), Tony nominee Andrew Rannells (The Book of Mormon, Jersey Boys), Andrew Samonsky (South Pacific, Queen of the Mist), Alexandra Silber (Master Class, Hello Again) and Tony nominee Mary Testa (Queen of the Mist, On the Town, Xanadu).
